Enlightened Equipment Enigma (down) temp rating accuracy nowadays?

Hi All,

I know in the past EE had a reputation as posting limit ratings vs comfort.

Has that changed as I see that their 30 degree Enigma quilt has the same 12oz fill weight as the Katabatic Palisades 30 degree quilt yet is 2oz lighter?

Any idea how their temp rating compares, for example, to Katabatic now?

Is there enough experience with the quilts to say a Katabatic temp of 30 is equitable to a WM 30 bag rating (megalite)?

I’ll be picking up a 30 degree quilt or bag to complement my WM Alpinlite overfill (c. 15 degrees now) so am trying to get an accurate feel on EE now.

Thanks,

S

I would take the two ounce hit and get the Katabatic. Body hugging form factor; nicer, efficient working details; better materials; and they are not running a private militia supply house in the shadows (but maybe that’s just my liberal fears imagining gun violence around every corner).

Have you seen this temp chart from WM, found at the bottom of their FAQ page? Might be another tool in your decision making

It’s the same address. I don’t  see militias as being necessarily conservative.

I see EE has started to use 30% overfill. Comparison to one of their older quilts may be slightly less accurate.

@ George

Ugh. I had no idea EE ownership was also running a tacticool company.

Im a Katabatic fanboy, so I would definitely go that route over EE. I recently bought a Nunatak ARC 20 and I can share that it’s quite delightful, too. Katabatic and Nunatak offer better craftsmanship and differential cuts and their temp ratings run true. Plus, you don’t really get the mixed reviews with Katabatic that you do with EE.

I happen to have all 3 brands. I would definitely say the Katabatic is the warmest. My 30F Palisades is as warm as my 20F Enigma. I wish I’d known that when I bought the Enigma. Both are good quilts, just the Enigma is aggressively rated and the Palisades conservatively IMHO. I think it’s a combo of the cut (shape), down fill to space/volume (not down fill alone) and the attachments system that makes the Katabatic “Warmer.”

I have a Nanolite WM, it is well rated most of the time, but tends to get some cold spots when the down moves around.

Awesome, thanks everyone.  Today’s the last day I think of the 20% off EE sale so knowing the 20EE is similar to the Palisades is super helpful.

Have a great one!
