Enlightened Equipment Enigma 950

I just got back from my month trip on the PCT. I took my EE enigma 950-fill quilt but I had significant problems getting the down even through the vertical baffles. I’m wondering if the lighter 950 fill down makes it harder to spread and distribute evenly. I would often end up with patches completely without down. Shaking the quilt usually just resulted in the empty patches moving. I experienced this issue from the very beginning so it wasn’t due to dirty or oily down.

Has anyone else experienced problems with distributing 950-fill down evenly through their bags? I was quite jealous of those with the zpacks bags and their horizontal baffles; they didn’t have the same issue.

I didn’t realize that 950 was actually a thing.

I’d say it’s normally not worth it, but I got it during their black friday discount sale so I figured I’d take advantage.

matthew …

was it humid during your trip at all, and was it DWR down?

perhaps the baffles were a bit underfilled? .. if anything higher fill down in dry conditions should expand quite a bit, more so than lower fill down
(for the same weight) … was it washed previously?

what is the temp rating on the quilt? … on lighter quilts/bags there is often not too much down so sometimes you end up with fairly “blank spots” under pressure (body shape) … some folks prefer synthetics for lighter quilts for that reason

others get overfill to mitigate the issue

best bet would be to ask EE

interestingly enough there was a recent thread on reddit about the same problem with horizontal baffles with the HG quilt …

I have a 20 degree enigma with 800 fill and I’ve noticed the same thing, but in my case it was used and washed so Im not bothered. The vertical baffles are a selling point for not allowing the down to shift to the side, right? That seems easily mitigated with an extra baffle running the length along the side (as that Reddit poster thought of doing themself.)

It might be out of the question due to costs (and probably almost no extra profit)  but it would be cool if they offered a choice of baffle designs.

duke …

some of the vertical baffled commercial sleeping bags have a “flow gate” to prevent the down from shifting in the larger baffles …

http://www.insotect.com/insotectflow.php

marmots top 900+ fill bags, the plasma series uses vertical baffles and “flow gates”

whether EE uses something similar i have no clue … my older EE has the karo baffles

best bet is to contact EE

Dang it!  I was just thinking of getting an EE bag, because I like the full zip and open foot box.  Now I need to do more research.

The Zpacks bag doesn’t provide for an open foot box.  Even with the optional longer zipper you’re feet are still in the box.

Dang it!

Speaking personally, I’ve never worried nor had consistent issues about down shifting around in my “above freezing” sleeping bags & quilts. If it shifts around, I have simply re-fluffed it. I’m bummed to hear that the OP is having this issue, especially with the 950fp down. Regardless, winter bags are a different story to me. Too much is at risk to have the down to move around a lot – period.

A long time ago, some well-known mummy bag manufacturers actually sold certain sleeping bags without any sewn-in side baffle blocks between the top and bottom of the bag. This meant that one could shift all the down in the horizontal baffles from the top of the bag to the bottom if they wanted to – on purpose. In theory, it meant a person could adjust it’s overall comfort, depending on how warm or cool the evening was. Having used one of those bags for many years, I knew right from the start how to properly use it, and only had very few issues with cold spots which was always reconcilable. However, I could easily see many folks walking out of a store and never being educated about that feature, thus resulting in multiple returns. Don’t know if mummy bags have ever been made that way since then.

Now granted, the down back then never had a fill power greater than 650, and as the OP had inferred, this might have played into its ease of keeping the down properly shifted. But nowadays, I haven’t experienced down shifting to be too big a deal on my Enigma. Just like my comforter at home, I just fluff it up before every use.

John, if you are concerned enough to not purchase one, I’d just send EE a note to get more info directly from them, before abandoning the EE quilts as a possible contender. I’d just hope they’d be honest with you about any QC issues or returns. My own direct correspondence with them has always been great.

There are no perfect designs. The poster on Reddit had problems with down shifting toward the ground when laying on his side due to horizontal baffles, which would not be an issue with vertical baffles of EE. EE used to use Karo baffles but changed (not sure why other than customer demand).  The most interesting design I know of in terms of minimizing down shift is the chevron baffles of the LocoLibre Ghost Pepper (in theory seems like the perfect solution).  From what others have said it really keeps down shifting to a minimum.  This also means you have to move down around manually versus shaking the quilt out to even things, but it seems like a good compromise if down shift is your issue.

As others have said I would contact EE…there may be a simple answer. (over stuff fixes a lot of shift issues, although at a weight and $ cost).  If not,  I am sure that there are PLENTY of people who would take it off your hands for what you paid for it.

I have the EE enigma with the 850 down…and I never, ever have a problem with the down not being where I want it.

When I washed it the second time after my CT trip this past summer I had some clumping issues, but I just re-dried it with tennis balls this time, and actually used the bag on top of my bed for a while and since then it seems to have un-clumped (it is the downtek treated down…) and all is right with the world.

I agree to contact EE.  They’ll make it right…..

The downtek stuff seems to clump more in my experience, especially post washing (seems to take longer to dry and unclump). Personally I’m slowly moving away from down because of this. The cold spots annoy me too much. But they totally have their place when compactness and absolute weight performance is an issue.

I just returned from a five day trip in Utah with my new Enigma 30F 950FP Downtek. I held my quilt up against a backlight, and the down was pretty well distributed, although a bias toward the footbox. No clumping, and it was easy to shift the down within the baffles if I wished. I do like this quilt.

Matthew, have you ever washed it? When I received my 850 Enigma the down was a little clumpy and some bare patches like you describe, so I washed it and more importantly ran it through the dryer with some tennis balls, on the no-heat setting for several hours, and was amazed how the quilt came out with all baffles plumped up. Now I always run it through the dryer with tennis balls before an outing.

I noticed yesterday that EE removed the “Untreated Down” option and today it appears that the “800FP” options is removed as well.

Wonder if this is temporary or permanent. There is a comment somewhere on their website (think in the FAQ Section) that eludes to the fact that the vast majority of folks order the treated down. Might be simplifying options to streamline things a bit.
