First post.
Nov 6, 2017 at 1:30 am #3500481Dr Satchin Panda at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA is doing some research on “Time Restricted Feeding” (TRF). Mostly preclinical studies (critters) to date. TRF is eating everything in a time window, usually from 8 hours to 12 hours max. For example, eating everything from 8am to 5pm would be TRF of 9 hours. “Eating” means anything and everything (including black coffee, tea, etc) except water.
There are multiple positive effects. Too early to conclude what it means for humans but one of the more significant effects is on endurance.
Time-Restricted Feeding Is a Preventative and Therapeutic Intervention against Diverse Nutritional Challenges — Amandine Chaix, Amir Zarrinpar, Phuong Miu, Satchidananda Panda, 2014
Groups and Definitions:
ad libitum: (eat whenever they want throughout a 24 hour day)
NA: normal chow, ad libitum
HFD: high-fat diet
12hFT: 12 hour Time Restricted Feeding every day (TRF)
9hFT: 9 hour Time Restricted Feeding every day (TRF)
5T2A: 5 days TRF, 2 days (weekend) eat ad libitumThe endurance results and discussion are in the first two paragraphs in the section titled: TRF Improves Nutrient Homeostasis.
These are test results from running on a treadmill to exhaustion…
“….[NA] mice…ran for 77 ± 8 min, whereas mice fed a HFD ad libitum…were exhausted after 50.2 ± 4.7 min. Mice in the 12hFT group ran for 73.3 ± 3.3 min, which was similar to NA mice…Surprisingly, 9hFT mice and 5T2A mice ran for 141.3 ± 4.6 min and 122.7 ± 9.2 min, respectively, far exceeding the endurance of NA mice of equivalent body weight….”
There is also a recent interview of Dr Satchin Panda by Rhonda Patrick. Listen for 8 minutes starting at 1:22 for discussion on endurance and lean muscle mass.
