Hello all-

This is my first post to the forum.  I a, still building out my backpacking gear for a Ultralite hike of the PCT or AT.

One item I am concentrating on is my sleep system.  I own a Ghost Whisperer hoodless Jacket, a down sleeping hat and a Klymit Inertia 3/4 pad.  Previously, I toyed with the 12 oz Naturehike Duck 3/4 bag but I was downright cold in the 50s.   Instead, I am now looking at the 20-deg F Western Mountaineering Semilite 3/4 bag.  I really do not want to waste that amount of money to only decide I don’t like it or it won’t keep me warm enough in the fall or early spring.

Is an elephant foot worth the trouble or would someone recommend something else that  works (and is that light)?  Or should I just go with a full length quilt from Enlightened Equipment (Enigma).

Thank you for reading.

Not a lot of backpackers use the half bag – parka combo. It’s more a climbers and mountaineers thing.

But if you find the idea appealing you need a top much warmer than the sewn-through and thinly filled Ghost Whisperer variety of coats.

Not everybody is comfortable without having their hands inside some sort of shell.

I use a half bag myself and have for a long time but as noted above you need a parka [ not a short hhodless jacket] as warm or warmr than the half bags rating. What works for me is also using an ultralite APEX shell/overquilt in combination or my big bivvy sack and both if it gets cold

You save weight but then you don’t leave yourself options for temp variations. If you have a full-size bag/quilt and temps drop lower than expected you can always wear your down puffy, but if that’s already used as your only significant top insulation then you risk a cold night.

BTW

I think that particular half bag is great value but at the fill weight I’m not surprised about your comments on warmth

Great responses all.  Thank you.

I chose hoodless so I could have the flexibility  to wear it when I am not on the trail.

I fervently dislike being cold and sleep quality does matter.

One think I considered to bring was a 6oz adventure medical nanoheat to wrap around me (not the half bag.

From what you all have said- the EE quilt is the way to go.

You need roughly 2x the insulate for sleep as putzing around camp. Either your jacket will be overly warm, or you wouldn’t have enough insulation to sleep well.  If you are trying to trip every ounce factor in the insulation from your jacket in how much fill / temp rating of the quilt.

As other have indicated, the elephant foot is more of a climbing thing where the puffy is warm enough for a complete inactivity, especially when doing big walls.
