Hi,

I received a 40f Prodigy to use for mid west summer trips and wondering what folk think of its rating? I am a cold is sleeper at times and if I knew it was going to be below 50f would bring my Wm Terra lite.

I don’t want to supplement it with extra clothes but could pack a Costco down throw for a trip or two as a backup.

I am not exactly a cold sleeper, but am definitely not a warm sleeper either.

My 40°F Prodigy kept me warm during several nights with temps a bit under 40°F although this was while using my Katabatic  Bristlecone bivy. With only a long sleeve merino/cocona base layer, merino longjohns, and fleece socks.

It’s my first synthetic quilt ever, and I was pleased with the lack of cold spots.

Thanks for the reply Ivo, that’s the same reason I went for the Prodigy over down.

I did use a 30f last year at about 40ish and was chilly but that could been down my lack of quilt technique.

What did you have on your head?

What did you have on your head?

A light polysomething beanie.

One night was particularly windy, so I added my merino buff underneath, woke to pee in the wee hours, and found out my head perspiring a little, so I took the buff off. Slept like a baby…

I generally don’t overdo the headwear when using a bivy.

Stephen,

I have found sleeping bag ratings to be more useful as a relative rating rather than as an absolute rating because of differences in metabolism and differences in type of rating (comfort rating vs. survival rating) that aren’t always conspicuously explained.  So here’s my experience relative to my other bags that I think have similar ratings.  My 40 Prodigy quilt is warmer than either my Modular Sleep System patrol bag or my VariCom Delta bag.  Both the MSS patrol bag and the VariCom Delta are survival rated at 30 so I think they are comforted rated at 40.  This is pure speculation on my part but I think the Prodigy quilt is warmer than either of those two sleeping bags because of the shapes.  I think the quilt drapes closer to the body which prevents dead air.

I’m a huge fan of the Prodigy and even asked Natick to evaluate it as a replacement for the inner sleeping bag  (patrol bag or Delta bag) of the issued military sleep systems.  My only complaints are that the Prodigy should be based upon the Enigma rather than the Revelation (so a sewn-closed footbox rather than snaps and bungees) and that the fabric rips stunningly easily.  But those have nothing to do with the temp rating.

Thanks very much Kris for your in depth post.

Hi Ivo,

Thanks for that.  I will need to back to drawing board with using a Costco quilt to boost the Prodigy as you mentoned on another thread is was not very breathable.
