Durston X-Mid 2 Pro for Solo Use?

Hello, I am thinking of getting a Durston X-Mid Pro and was debating between the 1 and 2. It would just be for me. I understand the 1p is quite roomy for a 1p tent. However, it appears for only 1.5 additional ounces I would get a ton more room with the 2 over the one, which would be nice, especially on rainy days. I also like to keep my pack and gear inside the tent, rather than vestibule if I am able. The one downside that readily comes to mind is the larger footprint, though I am aware of the skinny pitch option, and am not sure how often the larger footprint would be an issue. The larger size might also catch more wind. I often backpack in the Sierra, but also go to other areas of the west as well.

Did any of you choose the 2 person for solo use?

Thanks for your time and experience. Regards, Jeff

I did.  No regrets. I sleep diagonally and have a ton of room. But I am one who will never be happy in a 1P…4 days/nights of rain while hiking the Hoh Rainforest (who’d a thunk?) taught me the value of a little extra room.

Since you don’t think the footprint size will be an issue, I doubt you’ll regret getting the 2P.

I bought the two person for a Grand Canyon rim to rim trip.  Footprint was an issue at one campsite (didn’t know there was a skinny pitch option) but I never regretted the 2 person for one instant.  So much room – so little weight.  It’s a no brainer.

I do, but only because I always take one or two big dogs with me (a one person tent worked for me when I had a smaller dog). It’s pretty huge for one person, so if it were just for me, I’d be happy to save a couple of ounces and fit in smaller spaces. But that’s me, and I only sleep in my tent, I never use it to hang out. I’ve learned in previous threads that some people really like to have a spacious tent.

I purchased a Pro2 to be my “one shelter” for solo and trips with my wife.  After 1.5 years I decided while it worked, I wanted something with a smaller footprint, took less space in my pack, and lighter.

I own the X-Mid 2 Pro and use it as a solo tent. I enjoy hanging out and sleeping like a king. It’s worth it. I haven’t had any issues with the size of the footprint in the Sierras (or the West in general), even in the high basins where there can be a minimal amount of space to set up a tent. It’s been nice to have that amount of space when I prefer to wait out a storm and read. Sometimes I want to dig items out of my pack and re-organize my gear or fix something. The extra space is like having a clean work table to do those things.

It’s also flexible: When I backpack with my girlfriend, it works well. It’s less roomy for that situation, but it works fine for partners that cuddle close.

I was considering both these tents recently.  Ignoring stakes, the difference between them is 2.9oz in woven floors.

It’d be a tight fit to keep a pack in the 1p Pro unless its under your legs with a cut down pad.  In the non pro, I hang my pack in the vestibule from the trekking pole strap (pole tips down), avoiding rain splashback or water flow.

On a recent reddit thread discussing the idea of the X-Mid Pro 2 vs. 1 for solo use Dan Durston said:

In the 2/2+ sizes, if someone sleeps on the diagonal the floor is quite long, but the roof is quite sloping so whether someone finds there to be enough room / clearance depends on how well it is pitched, bulk of the sleep sleep setup, and personal preference.

Whereas in the Pro 1 the walls are much steeper so it is less sensitive to this. It has 90 inches of length even at a foot off the ground, which is probably the spec you want to look at. As far as I am aware, the Pro 1 is the longest tent in this category (1P trekking pole tents near 1 lbs) by that metric.

The above comment from me was referring to fitting really tall hikers in the 6’6″ – 7’0″ range. If someone is up in that range, the 2P/2+ are somewhat hard to predict because with more wall slope, the length can change quite a bit depending on how high and tight it is pitched, whereas the 1P is steeper for a solo hiker and thus tall hikers tend to have a more consistent experience.  As far as I can tell, the Pro 1 is probably the longest 1P shelter in its category ( 1P trekking pole shelters weighing about 1 lbs). I think people would have it more length in the 2/2+ but experiences vary.

Yes, I forgot to mention the context. Sorry about that.
