I was a little cold on my last backpacking trip. So, I’m thinking of adding a closed cell foam pad under my inflatable. My inflatable has a 3.2 R value. And I’m using a 20 degree F quilt. Most of the foam pads I find are 72 x 20 inches. My inflatable is 78 x 25. If I use a smaller foam pad under the inflatable will it make much more difference than using a foam pad that is the same size as, or closer in size to, the inflatable?

If your inflatable is 25 inches wide when uninflated, it will be a few inches narrower when inflated. Closer to the same width as the foam pad.
Maybe it’s easier to provide extra warmth with extra insulation – a vest or hood or something.
The time I’ve found I really need an extra foam pad underneath is when I’m sleeping on snow, which really sucks the heat out of you
Thermarest RidgeRest, Exped FlexMat, and Exped FlexMat Plus are available in 25″ widths.
Thanks for the feedback.
Jerry – I should have said that I was wearing a Patagonia Hooded Down Sweater which has an 800 fill power. But down below only had my hiking pants on. A base layer would have been a good idea. I’m going to get my inflatable out and measure it flat and filled.
Bill – Those are the mats I’m considering. I was just wondering if the smaller, and lighter pads are a good idea or if I really needed full coverage.
I think the narrower CFC Ridgerest will do just fine. any heat lost on the 2 1/2″ perimeter would be minimal since it would not be in much contact with the floor IF you have it well inflated.
I have laid my outside (shell) clothing under my R 5.3 winter mattress in 10 F. in my tent and it did help but the Ridgerest will be much better.
BTW that REI R 5.3 mattress  died and I now have the new Thermarest X-Therm XTR mattress in 25″ size Large. With its 7.3 R value I doubt I’ll ever need another mattress under it. I got the 25″ width because “I deserve it”. :oP
Eric – thanks for that. I ended up getting the Nemo Tensor Extreme and to be safe an Outdoor Vitals 1/8″ closed cell pad. I notice my other pad had some wear on the bottom from a leanto floor I had been using it on. If I don’t stay warm on this pad I’ve got other problems.
