Down Quilt – alternatives to Enlighted Equipment Revelation?

Long time lurker / first time poster.. hoping to get some advice!

I’m looking to upgrade my sleeping bag / quilt situation to ultralight across a couple different trip types:

  1. 3 seasons, solo, hammock, w/ exped synmat instead of underquilt
  2. Summer-only, 2 people (w/ my wife), Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 tent w/ sleeping pads (2 exped synmats)

Right now we each have a down bag weighing around 34 oz, rated to 30 degrees.

It seems like an x-wide (64″) Enlightened Equipment Revelation (rated to 20) could be a great way to give myself some additional flexibility in shoulder seasons in the hammock, and then serve as a double-quilt for both of us on summer trips. At around 21 oz, I take a couple oz weight penalty vs buying a quilt specifically for myself, but save some money, and I don’t want to buy two quilts if possible (although maybe that’s an option I should consider).

My problem – I’m buying this for a trip that leaves in 3.5 weeks and the ship time for EE is 5-7 weeks.

Questions:

  1. Are there any other options I should be considering, if I want to upgrade for both of those situations for under $400?
  2. If not, then are there any good alternatives to the EE Revelation that can ship in under 3 weeks? I have had a hard time finding anything.

Thank you

Yes it is, they say 3-4 weeks delivery so I’ll contact them to see if they can meet my timeframe.

Do you have experience with either or both (EE and Katabatic)?

I have an older EE extra wide revelation

i dont think it would be wide enough for 2 people

Thanks Eric! that helps tremendously, I’ll look for a solo quilt instead then

I have a Katabatic palisade 30 degree quite and the quality is probably slightly higher than EE. I also have an EE revelation 20. Both are tremendous products and about the same warmth. I’d like to be able to open the foot box on the Palisade but that has been remedied with the Flex version. Maybe look at the attachment system to see which you prefer.

Have you looked at Jacks R Better? They are the only “cottage” company that keeps stock on hand.  I picked up a summer weight 40 degree Sierra quilt in a pinch while on the trail.  They make a wide variety of bags for hammock and ground sleepers.

Another long time lurker here, finally signed up so I could weigh in- I’ve got an EE revelation “wide, regular” that we bought with the same idea.  It does work in certain situations- I got the 10 degree quilt because I sleep very cold, and I’d say that we can use the the quilt for the two of us down into the high 30s pretty comfortably if we’re wearing sleeping clothes (midweight base layer).

Though I like the design, I don’t know if the revelation really offers anything over the enigma- even with two people, your feet won’t be warm enough if you don’t have the footbox closed up.  There’s just room for two pairs of feet in there.  We liked the revelation so that we could easily open it up and use it over or under our synthetic ray-way two person quilt (MYOG), and that works well.  We actually most often have the revelation plus a synth solo quilt shared between my wife and I and our 3.5 year old.  That works well down into the high 20s.

Hope that helps a bit.  I think your idea could work, but only if you’re ok with sleeping close and you’re not too close to the temp rating of the quilt.

I found the X-Wide Revelation to be too big for one, and too small for two. I now have a Wide 30F Enigma for myself and I’m much happier. Given that it’s mid August, I would expect EE’s lead time to start dropping off pretty soon. This fall I plan to order a 20F Accomplice even though there’s a good chance it won’t see use till next year.

Lead times are down from 14-16 weeks just a couple months ago. Mostly because of a huge increase in staffing and weekly production. I don’t expect it to go much lower, maybe 4-6 weeks, as we head into fall. We do have weekly garage sales and other ready to ship quilts that go up every Monday at 1pm central. We are also working on a limited run of 20* Revelations (200 units) with a special color 20d shell and special 7d micro ripstop liner (same weight as our normal 10d) that should go up in a week or two. Those will be available to ship as soon as they go up

Since my competition chimed in, I might as well, too:

We have 20° size medium and long, $270 solo quilts in stock, ships this week.

Can’t go wrong with any of the options mentioned in this thread…quality gear all.

Jan,

I only responded because this thread is directly talking about my products and lead times. I’m not self promoting, because I don’t need to.

I have an EE  x-wide quilt, i’ve found when i added a highly wind resistant fabric sleeve to the bottom, it was doable to use as a two person quilt for us. I’m shorter than average at 5′ 7″, but with somewhat largish shoulders and chest for my size. She is taller than the average woman.

But the problem is ever, when sleeping with any woman i’ve noticed, that they tend to wrap themselves up and the man be damned–at least that’s been my consistent experience so far.  And they call us selfish, pfff.. (rolls eyes in overly exasperated manner).

Sometimes i think that two separate quilts + 1 larger over bivy is the way to go, despite being the heavier option.  That way, you can share some mutual warmth, but neither partner can hog “the blankets” so to speak.  That, and i have a very different sleeping temp than my partner.  She runs much colder and typically needs at least 10 to 20 degrees more warmth than i do.  It’s sometimes hard to match up with one homogeneous quilt.

That seems to be a fairly common difference between women and men, especially if the men in question are not older.
