Anyone use them? I want to get some but am having a hard time choosing brands. I’ve tried on the rab argan down pants and loved them. However having the side zips seems ideal to have. Interested in the WM flight down pants and the FF Helios down pant. I hate the idea of layering under a quilt but it seems like this would be a cheaper option to increase the temperature rating. Thanks everyone

Goosefeet Gear will make a pair to your exact specs.

<p style=”padding-left: 40px; text-align: left;”> Consider Kora Yak wool base layer; they are warmer than merino, are 230 wt can be worn as activewear without worry of damage, will sleep better inside your bag, and as expensive as they are, they’re cheaper than down pants.

RE: Side zips

They are convenient when you plan on taking off the down pants and not having to remove your shoes. But they do add weight. And you might rather have that weight in the down, not in the zipper.

When winter snow camping, I use a aged pair of Integral Designs (now Rab) syn down pants without zippers. I wear them as part of my sleep system and keep them on during breakfast and the breakdown of camp. Then I step onto my closed cell foam pad, take off my boots and down pants, replace my shoes and pack up the pants and pad.

BTW I own a Western Mountaineering Flight Jacket. It is a work of wonder and delightful cozy comfort. I did not get the Flight pants because of cost, and I thought the synthetic down pants would function well enough.

I have never needed insulation on my legs while hiking…perhaps I am unusual. However hanging out in camp cooking dinner, star gazing etc. I need lower body insulation. Normally that is 150 wt merino bottoms + Pata Capilene expedition weight. But below 25 deg I need more. Picked up a pair of Montbell UL down pants on GS for $50 awhile back and really like them. Can’t recommend paying full price, but light down pants are great for camp and sleeping in the 30-15 degree range. Agree with Bruce, zips sound like a good addition, but I have never missed them.

@shae, I have a custom-made anorak from GFG but not their down pants. The anorak is incredibly warm, lighter than air, and high quality.

Western Mountaineering Flash pants – paid $200 in 2013. I’ve been happy with the purchase. Price and weight were my criteria. I use them sitting around camp and sleeping. They’re lighter and much warmer than the wool base layer they replaced.

Goosfeet is also good – the customization is nice, and the price is also good. I got my partner a pair 3 or 4 years ago. The cut was a little off in the seat (waist line gets pulled low in back when sitting), but she’s still happy with them. I’d imagine he’s gotten better with the pattern since then.

If you’re weight conscious, you definitely want to consider them part of your sleep system if they’re in your pack.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>@trailmercury Those looks pretty sweet. I’m semi trying to avoid synthetic insulation. I know it degrades a lot quicker than down. I’m the kind of guy who owns his stuff for way to long (I’m almost 31 and I have two pairs of shoes from when I was 15-16). So I’m always looking at my gear as a long term investment. I care about weight but not to the point where I’m weighing everything, Lol I’m a weirdo!!

@btolley
I was looking at that jacket too. Again I’m in the market for a good down jacket as well. The FF Helios down jacket looks awesome. As I was saying in the comment above I tend to use my gear forever and am looking for something that will withstand the test of time (and my nasty self)

+1 to the WM Flash pants. I’ve had them since 2014 and always wear them to bed on the winter trips.

(Wearing down pants makes those early morning trips to the bathroom a lot easier!)

Same here for the Flash pants. Never used them during the day but at camp and sleeping they are very nice indeed . They compress very small and weigh very little too.

I use Montbell down trousers at camp and as part of the sleep system to extend the range of my bag. Wonderful.

@mrmuddy – do you recall what year you bought them?

I suppose there could be a difference in how well he does mens vs womens patterns.

Ben does excellent work and I would not hesitate purchasing a pair. Purchased a pair 2018, 4.5oz/DownTex, Baffled and paid $110 @ 7.55oz.
