I finally broke down and ordered some GOOSEFEET down booties with an optional 50% overfill. These are for sleeping. For anything beyond the tent I needed the GOOSEFEET bootie covers which I also ordered.

Since I keep my boot liners in the foot of my -20 F. mummy in winter I did not want down booties with a rand and stiff insole for walking around. Just too crowded in the foot of my bag to wear those. The combination of soft sole sleep booties and over booties is to me the best of both worlds.

As far as I know GOOSEFEET is the only business offering these light over booties. I got the lightest version.

Back in the day (1980s), we sold down socks and down booties.  The socks were all taffeta, soft and swishy, and only used inside a tent or minimal walking around in a cabin.  The booties had taffeta uppers, but Codura (the heavier packcloth of the day) soles with 1/4″ CCF in them.

In one type, you could remove the CCF from a slit at the end, and it got more swishy, although not as a cloud-like as the all-taffeta ones.   Maybe that approach offers enough in and out of the sleeping bag?

Nice. I have a pair from Western Mountaineering.  I bought some cheap waterproof shoe covers from Amazon along with the largest felt inserts that they had. The down is warm, but the soles were thin.

Several years ago, I grabbed some Feathered Friends booties. They came with the down booties plus outer shells that have a foam sole. When I bring them, I put the shells into my pillow stuffsack or under my hips if I’m in a hammock.

I use my EE socks and if I need to get out of tent/bivy I usually pull my Vapor Barrier Liners over them.  Not intended for hanging around camp though.. just quick hit n run if needed during the late night… and winter for me usually snow covered ground..

dirtbag, my VBL socks are neoprene foam divers socks so would not fit over the down booties.

If I ever do hut “camping”  I’ll need the over boots but maybe with a felt insole instead of that thin foam insole ithat come n the over boots.

I  like that GOOSEFEET gives overfill options. I chose 50% overfill and that should be just right for sleeping in subzero weather. My LL Bean winter mummy is comfort rated at -20 F.
