"Double-Walled" Cuben Fiber Tent

I am planning on an AT thru-hike next year. I like double-walled tents because I think that there’s less of a chance of condensation developing as opposed to a single-walled (cuben fiber) tent. But I like cuben fiber for the weight savings and the fact that it dries much quicker than silnylon. I used a ZPacks Solplex (15oz) on the PCT but was looking at getting a MLD Duomid with Solomid XL innernet. But then I was wondering:

1) Is there a double-walled cuben fiber tent that I’m overlooking?

2) Could I hang a MLD Solomid XL innernet (90x30x48) in my ZPacks Solplex (interior:90x30x48)? If I cut out the existing net and floor?

3) Would I be just as well off if I bought a Sea to Summit Nano Mosquito Pyramid Net and custom-fit it inside the Solplex (adding 4.85 oz)?

Is it worth it? I leave a door or two open when possible but am afraid with the rainier weather on the AT that I’ll still get too much condensation :(

I appreciate your input. Thanks!

Only to mention that 2/3 inners (asymmetric fore-and-aft) are very practical with a double ‘mid.

Do you mean the Duomid with Solomid inner? I really like the larger vestibule space that that would provide, especially when it’s raining. But am worried about the larger overall footprint of the set-up. I’ve used a ZPacks Duplex before and that was like a palace but took up so much room. Being a slower hiker, I’ve gotten to designated campsites with no room left to pitch the Duplex. Do you think that that wouldn’t be a problem on the AT? Just start looking for a spot earlier?

Thank you! I don’t know why I never saw the insert before. I had thought of making my own inner for the Solplex or Duplex but now won’t have to. I love the Duplex. Guess I’ll just have to pick my site earlier! Thanks again.

I just noticed that insert recently. I *think* it might be a relatively new addition.

For whatever reason….its been around for a while…but zpacks had it hidden from their site and only showed it to customers that contacted them about wanting a double wall option. Basically….I was told by zpacks that they felt that if they had a big link on their duplex page to the insert, that people would think that the duplex really needed it, which zpacks feels they don’t.

Thanks again. Will put in the order and somehow make the size of the Duplex work on the AT :)

Keep in mind that any exposed ground/grass/dirt under the “outer” will contribute to moisture collecting/condensing on the underside of the outer. Un-floored vestibules can be major contributors.

“Cut-to-fit” polycryo (window film) will reduce a lot of this.

I usually avoid “live” areas such as grass/meadows, bodies of water, etc. And I use window film cut to the bathtub dimensions only. So, I should cut to include the vestibules? Will give it a try. Thanks!

That is an interesting idea to try and cover vestibule space…but…you would have to be careful. If there was wind blown rain, the vestibule pieces of polycryo would get rain on them and then start puddling.

By the way…I just saw this today (and ordered). Duck brand makes new sizing for their heavy duty film (64″x126″)..and…amazon sells an “ecommerce packaging” setup (you don’t get the cardboard box), for half price ->

Its only $5.88…awesome price.

Beverly, No I don’t mean the solomid inner.

Locus Gear, among others, sell 2/3 and 3/4 inners as well as 1/2 and 1/1. The 1/2 chops the mid in half – half vestibule, half inner. The 2/3 provides a wide strip at the front of the mid, while the rear is similar to the 1/2 (and the 1/1 for that matter). The 2/3 provides nominally 1/3 vestibule, 2/3 inner, hence the asymmetry. (The 3/4 inner tapers in plan from 1/1 at one side, to 1/2 on the other side). I have the 2/3 in both mesh and nonmesh, and recommend the 2/3 mesh as a highly workable solution.

Thanks, Robert. That is a great option but I may try to get the Duplex to work with the double-wall insert since I already have the Duplex. It’s just so darn big. Exterior is 100″x 86.5″. The bathtub is 90″ x 45″ so it’s plenty big to stash gear inside with me if necessary. And the double-wall addition is only 3.2 oz at $99. Gotta give it a try…

Thanks for your input!

Big Sky International makes a double wall Soul in cuben (they call it Let-It-Pour fabric).
