Any thoughts on cheap/light solutions to throw over my dog at night? She’s got a fleece jacket that covers her torso and she will have a blue pad or a ZLite under her.

I’m thinking I should just go buy a yard of midweight fleece at the local fabric store and cut it to a reasonable size. Any better ideas?

Depending upon what your dog gets into while hiking, a fleece blanket can double as a fleece vest for you — like a big scarf that you arrange to cover your chest.

Between a coat and a fleece blanket, that’s as good a solution as we’ve been able to find.

I recently made a quilt for myself with 5 oz APEX and 0.66 membrane 10 from RSBTR. Once I cut out the material I had enough left to make a quilt for my 2 (small) dogs to share. I made the dogs’ quilt first to practice working with the thin fabric. Not really applicable if you are not currently making a larger project, but it is was very simple and sized perfectly.

Here’s a picture of my dog this spring. I let her use my puffy at night:

It seems obvious, but be sure to make it long enough to extend beyond the butt, especially when the dog is curled up.  That outside radius really eats up the fabric.  Also, make the neck and belly openings adequately large for the same reason.  Doing a “cut-to-fit” on a standing dog doesn’t work. (Don’t ask me how I know.)

Good advice on cutting it to size. Thanks, Greg.

Good idea using the Costco quilt. I knew there was a reason I bought an extra one of those.

Ryan, your Bulldog looks quite snug. I think my 2.5 year old Heeler is too energetic (and sheds too much) to share my jacket with.

I think I’ll stay with fleece for now but KL’s quilt looks like the perfect solution if she keeps coming on trips with me.

She used to wiggle her way out of it, but I think lately she has realized that it’s what keeps her from shivering all night : )
