In order to extend the comfort range on my EE Enigma Custom quilt (20F (-6 C), 950, regular, wide, 7D Graphite inside and out, 19.45 oz), I am adding a zipper to eliminate drafts.
My concern is whether the diaphanous 7D material could handle a zipper. Has anyone tried attaching a zipper to something this light?
EE makes the Copperfield wind shirt in 7D. It has a front zipper. The 7D isn’t all that much lighter than their 10D, as far as I can tell.
Still, you will want to be careful about not catching the fabric in the zipper when you zip up.
I think that ZPacks sleeping bags are 7D, so it seems it can be done.
FWIW, I have a similar EE quilt that is pretty old at this point and not as warm as it used to be, due to cumulative down loss and compression. Last year I decided to buy a second quilt/bag for colder trips and I also wanted to have the flexibility to use it as a quilt or a bag. Â After some deliberation, my choice was to buy a ZPacks bag that already had a zipper underneath and add snaps (using small grosgrain ribbon loops) to attach an elastic cord for use as a quilt. It worked great, in fact I think ZPacks should include the snaps routinely on their bags.
If you sew the zipper onto the double folded hem there shouldn’t be any problem.
A quilt with a zipper…isn’t that called a sleeping bag?
