    @drk

    I have a trip planned for this weekend (10/11), starting in Tuolumne Meadows with permit to camp near Ten Lakes area. I would like to camp off-trail rather than at the lakes area. Looking at a map I see there is an area north of the Ten Lakes, between the Tuolumne River and the Ten Lakes, flanked by Colby Mountain and Grand Mountain. There also seem to be a stream in the area. Anyone camped here? Or, have other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Lowell

    Locale: Wine Country

    Um, that terrain drops very quickly and steeply into the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne, considered by most hikers as inaccessible.

    The smaller, most northeast lake of Ten Lakes will have fewer people …but it’s a bit of a drop to get down to it.

    There is plenty of room at Ten Lakes to find a quiet corner, but it is one of the premier Backcountry destinations.  If you want more solitude, head to the far north of the park.
