If you could afford it, then it almost certainly was an imitation.
It is all in the glass!

Um … I should add that you need special high-res film in a Minox, plus you need special film processing to get the best results. Ordinary film, ordinary processing, well … (been there too).

@rcaffin is right. There are very few film processors these day and they are not cheap. More plastic, more waste for a bunch of pictures that you many not like.
