So, I was going to buy the mcnett field repair kit…..so I could get some more tenacious tape but more importantly…a .25oz tube of seam grip (I have a 1oz tube but I don’t want to take that whole thing backpacking).

But…..I also have like 5 exped repair kits….and they have .175oz containers of “exped textile glue”. Has anyone opened one of those? Is it near enough the same to seam grip or is it different? Is it gooey like seamgrip?

So, in case anyone is wondering…I went ahead and opened one of the exped textile glues to fix a pinhole (it was so tiny I couldn’t even see it with my eye) in my exped synmat. After rereading the exped instructions, it sounded like it was nearly exactly the same as seam grip……the instructions even suggest using seamgrip as an alternative textile glue.

They are slightly different though. The exped glue is slightly less viscous, and it dries flatter than seamgrip. Seamgrip tends to hold its shape and dries clear and glossy, and rubbery/sticky. The exped flattens, dries more glossy, and is not sticky. The exped glue had a much stronger chemical smell….kind of like acetone, though once dry didn’t have a smell. Also, exped wants you to do 3 small applications of the glue 5-10 minutes apart, then wait 8 hours….where before I just did 1 application of the seamgrip. The exped glue was still flexible though.

So, the hole I fixed was actually on top of the pad….so I was grateful that it was a smoother, silkier patch of glue vs seamgrip. Though I also previously repair a pinhole in the bottom of a pad….where seamgrip would have been better (to grip the floor better).
