As some of you know, Black Rock Gear has closed their shop for this year, I’ve talked with them and they’ve really struggled dealing with the pandemic and tight restrictions in their neck of the woods. With that in mind, I plan to help fill the demand they worked so hard to supply, and bring a little variety to the marketplace with a fresh perspective.

A down hat is currently in the works, as well as some other gear, but for now we’re focusing on the hat as our first product, that was their niche item, and their absence leaves a vacancy. We’re taking a different approach to the design, it will probably look closer to a fur trapper hat than a beanie. It’s still in the early stages of development, so we are curious, what are some design issues people have had with the Black Rock Gear down hat? Things that you wish they included or did differently? What new functions would interest you? Keep in mind we’re trying to keep it lightweight at around an ounce, but we are open to all suggestions. Thanks!

If you are going to make a cap make a real cap, windproof. Moderately waterproof [ ie: highly water resistant] really warm say minimum 150GSM synthetic and very adjustable to wear over different weights of balaclavas. Head shaped not pot shaped and very definitely a visor to keep snow and rain off my spectacles. Integrated face mask with exhalation valves and goggle compatible
Mad trapper but in modern materials in other words
Above 0C I prefer a beanie plus Nike running cap, down to -18C I add a LW balaclava, below that I change the LW balaclava for something Chouinard made in the 80s/90s, pile plus Windstopper.
But I seem to collect beanies by the dozen and I’ve lost count of how many hats I own now
I would however pay well for a clone of the original Nike marathon cap, you know it was good because they stopped making it

BRG’s down hat in their larger size was uncomfortably tight on my head. I do have a larger than average head.

Most anything fits me and makes me look like a dork, but almost nothing fits my wife’s head…so how about some women’s-specific fitments?  That always seems to be a problematic factor for us in all clothing pieces.

Ear flaps that extend down far enough to snap under your chin!  It keeps the hat in place if you sleep in it.
