I’m looking to get educated on the differing units off of the Park Road and what all is available for a four to five day backpacking trip in mid to late July. From what I’ve heard, it sounds as though it could be worth it to take the bus the entire bus ride back to Wonder Lake, if nothing else just to see it.
Anyone wanna suggest some routes?
-Definitely familiar with off-trail hiking and route finding. Ideally I would like to be able to incorporate some mountain passes with the ability to hunker down low in the valleys if significant weather begins to settle in.
-Of course would like a loop or semi loop trip and I understand this can involve significant river crossings, which is OK as long as it’s reasonable for my girlfriend and I to wade through. Class 3 scrambling is fun. Lower class 3 for her. We’re fit Coloradans living at 8,000’, so we like to put on “decent” mileage, depending on elevation gains and losses.
-Big views and glaciers are cool. My girlfriend would prefer us to not see as many Grizzlies as I ideally would. I wanted Katmai! Next time I come back perhaps I’ll go full on bush plane.
-What else am I missing?
The second half of our trip will involve heading to the southern coast with gf’s sister and her bf who live in Anchorage. We have some ideas in the regions of Seward, Kenai, Homer, etc… But are there any liked minded folks here at BPL that have any sightseeing, and/or booze drinking spots – recommendations down there?
