When I noticed that the .5 cuben and .5 noseeum where basically the same weight I began to ponder an idea for a hammock bug net. Most hammock nets are designed in a sort of half circle or taco shape. Like a capital D rotated 90 degrees. With the straight side being your ridgeline and the curved part of the D being the part below you nearest the ground. I think most of you will know what I mean without needing pictures. If the upper third of the net remained noseeum mesh while the remaining lower two thirds were to be replaced with cuben fiber you should able to partially protect your insulation from cross winds and blown rain while still having plenty of ventilation and bug protection all around. Like most bug nets designed this way the bottom fabric hangs quite a bit lower than your hammock and your back will never be directly against the non breathable cuben, so there should be plenty of space for ventilation since this is only designed to be a buffer against wind and rain that comes in under your tarp (rain bouncing off of rocks and ricochet onto your back and or gear) and not intended to keep you as protected (and clammed up) as a bivy. If it would not prove to be a strain on the noseeum material then maybe the cuben bottom could act as a waterproof gear loft for an UL pack and maybe your boots. I believe there would be little to no weight penalty by combining two similarly weighing fabrics over basically the same amount of surface area as conventional designs. Sometimes I pitch my hammock tarp on the ground and jerry rig my hammock net as a mesh inner. Well there ya go, voila built in cuben ground sheet.

That seems like an excellent idea, wrapping bugnet and splash protection into one piece. If you could get a nice bathtub floor too it would be amazing!
I think I’d want more than .5 DCF for anything I planned to use as a groundsheet though.

Just use a polycro ground sheet when you’re planning for ground use. You’ll get the projection and still have the benefit of the DCF bathtub.

Try simply light designs. Or ask Dutch to use cuben instead of argon on the bottom of his summer sock since that’s basically what you’re after.
.5oz Cuben is actually .54oz. Argon comes in a .6 around half the price?
Hanging, they’ll both provide winw and splash protection. On the ground, if you’re under a tarp and on top of polycro, they’re also largely equivalent, unless you’re in standing water. But for a true bathtub you need sealed seams in the Cuben, which eats in to your weight savings. I think you’re saving about 1/8 of an ounce.
If cost is at all a factor, you might want to grab a calculator and see what it is you’re actually paying for besides just ‘Cuben’.
The premise remains the same though. I only mentioned the cuben fiber material since that is how I came up with the idea l. If argon is a better material I can easily change the design
Well, then you’re not doing anything new. The bug sock I linked above already has argon for the entire bottom of the sock that is advertised as being for wind and splash protection. I owned one for a short time, it works well.
Yeah as it turns out this yet another case of parralel thinking but I didnt know that when I came up with the idea. I intended to build this but I will probably just buy one if I decide to use it. The only reason for DIY at this point would to be to try to make it a bit lighter than dutch’ss over 10 oz design. But that might not even be possible. I have since discovered that I was beat to the punch for this particular concept. Dunno why people dont think I realize this now. Maybe I wasnt clear in my replies? Sry if so. Later guys. :)
