I have the 3 person for camping with my girlfriend and think it’s perfect. Wouldn’t want anything smaller. YMMV.
I have the old version UL2, bit heavier, same size give or take an inch, and have found it OK for my wife and I.
Possable hubba hubba nx as well.
I guess what kind of trips are you using it for, and how do you sleep with your wife, are you planning on chilling at camp in the tent in the rain?
We have a similar sized 2p tent (tiger wall) and it is fine. If its cold you cant really move around much anyway. If its warm, and car camping, and its pouring rain and you wanna hang out in the tent, maybe bigger? Although we took a 2p tent (Zephyr 2, only 6″ wider at the head) 1 mile in, hung out and cooked in it in the rain and were not cramped. But my wife likes laying down while hanging out. Some of the smaller tents don’t have much headroom for 2 people to sit up comfortably simultaneously. But you probably won’t have that issue cuz the copper spur has poles on all 4 corners.
If I was thinking of doing a lot of hanging out at camp in the rain I might splurge (money + weight) and get a nice big tarp.
General camping in 25-85 degrees, backpacking mainly and hunting and fishing pack ins.I always pack a 8×10 Siltarp in case.
Car camping will be done with kodiak canvas tent as we have 3 kids.
My wife and I have the CS HVUL2… it’s perfect for two, and can’t fathom “needing” the 3P, unless you just want the extra room/weight. I had the CS UL1, and it’s palatial for 1. I switched to a Nemo Hornet 1P, but the room of the CS1 is extraordinary.
I also had the MSR Hubba Hubba NX… it’s tighter in the head region than the CS… its walls lean in tighter at the ends which was a no-go for my wife. I exchanged it for the CS HV, which she loves.
I don’t have experience with hunting or fishing, but sounds like extra gear. Would you want to bring it into the tent? Our 2p tent almost exactly fits a wide and a standard pad, but there is some foot space. The packs go in the vestibule unless I’m solo. What does one do with guns and ammo? Do they come in the tent?
we have the HVUL3 and love it and have always preferred the 3 to the 2. Â Love the extra room.Sure it is heavier, and larger, but gear goes inside it incl the packs and the space is a luxury. Â These things are very personal though and you should at least try to try them if at all possible. I lay awake at night wondering why we do not get a 2, but every time we try a 50-52 inch width tent we prefer the wider one. Â Maybe something in between even better –
