Does anybody here know a reputable DIYer that would be willing and able to take an old Marmot sleeping bag I have and chop the hood and zippers off and re-stuff it with a lighter weight down to make it into a top quilt? The bag is my dad’s from the late 80’s I believe and I want to convert it to a lightweight quilt for him for his birthday?

It was probable really good gear for its time but honestly I don’t think that will work well. The reason is that back then the shell fabrics were so heavy in comparison to modern UL fabrics that the weight would [most probably] compress high FP down and there would be no real net benefit.
Sounds like a neat idea, I’m sure your Dad will love it (as long as the bag itself doesn’t hold any particular fond memories – so be sure he won’t mind the bag being torn apart…).
One DIYer who comes to mind is Aaron Sorenson – he does high quality work. Don’t know how busy he is but it might be worth sending him a PM.
