I’ve had a SMD Fusion 50 for several years. Not a bad pack at all – especially considering how rarely I’ve used it – but there are things about it I find limiting, and I think I’m ready to upgrade and start taking more trips. I expect most of them will be no more than three days, but I’d like the option to go longer and take winter trips. Also, my sweetie sometimes tags along, in which case that base weight will increase by several pounds (mostly due to larger tent, double pad and twin quilt). That will of course mean more food and water as well. I’ve considered the Circuit, Gorilla and Mariposa, Swift V and now the Crown3 60. I ruled out Zpacks, MLD and HMG mainly due to cost, but also because I didn’t feel like the configurations fit me as well as the aforementioned (I like pockets and rigging options).
At this point I’m leaning toward the Crown3 as it seems like a lot of pack for the money ($168 on sale -price is a consideration given relative infrequency of outings), and I really like the modularity.
Specifically, if I get the Crown, any reason I shouldn’t go with the undyed? Generally, any thoughts good or bad regarding the Crown? Seems to be pretty well regarded on BPL – again, especially considering the price point. Any thoughts regarding whether I might be better served by one of the other options, or even options I didn’t mention?
