Take a look at that first story.  Anyone else get the impression that he was taking a selfie?

Even if you aren’t actively trying out for this year’s Darwin Awards, stuff happens. It’s happened to me too many times, and 2020 was no exception.

So a satellite tracker is standard equipment while backpacking, just like my trail running shoes and pack. Life goes on.

Been using SPOT Gen. 3 for the past 6 years. Wish I had a full size Garmin In-Reach to replace both my SPOT 3 and my old Garmin Colorado GPS.

I consider the costs associated with owning rescues beacons cheap “life insurance” and for my wife, good assurance B/C she can track my trip with the SPOT website.

Great discussion.   On my previous spot and my current mini, I use tracking on every trip I go on.  Most are off trail, solo, and spontaneous.  Gotta give loved ones and potential SAR a general idea of you position within a 10 min time span.  Usually at my pace that is about 1/2 sq mile in the worst case scenario.  The bonus is the sat comms.

Starting to think turning on tracking when things “go vertical“ may be a good thing.
