I am experimenting with breakfast smoothies for the trail. Found a couple of options on a search of this forum, which helped me get started. Now the project is to figure out a mix we like. Some recipes call for “yogurt powder” and the packitgourmet smoothie ingredient lists have it too. So my question is, does the unsweetened yogurt powder offered by various internet sources, tend to have live cultures, or is it used only for flavor?
I guess I could consider making fresh yogurt on the trail, as described in this forum, but just packing up smoothie mix with the yogurt powder in it is the current project.
Other ingredients I’m using are vanilla rice protein powder (because my husband likes it), Nido, and some freeze-dried fruits (blueberries, strawberries, bananas) I found at Trader Joe’s.

Jul 7, 2016 at 6:09 am #3412824I’m using this product “as give it a try” on your granola for the first time with two of my granddaughters on a nine day adventure in a week. Have tried it myself at home and found it to be smooth like yogurt, silky like milk.

Jul 7, 2016 at 6:41 am #3412836You can buy a powder yogurt starter culture. It has live culture, they just need to be re-hydrated.
Jul 7, 2016 at 8:50 am #3412879So get some yogurt powder for the substance/flavor and then get some packets of the starter culture to mix in too? I hadn’t thought of doing that. Thanks!

Looks interesting. Especially for hikes (like sometimes in west Texas) when we are carrying all our water anyway so it doesn’t matter if some of it is already in the packaged food. For this summer’s trip we’ll be in the Pacific Northwest with water on the land, so I am seeking mostly to carry food in dry forms.
Thanks!

Another good idea! Thanks!
