After doing some research, it looks like my options for canister fuel on the Collegiate loop are pretty slim. My Wife and I are starting and ending at Twin Lakes. We are resupplying at Mount Princeton Resort and Monarch Crest Store. As far as I can tell, UPS does not ship fuel canisters. The Monarch Crest Store only accepts UPS packages. It also appears that USPS employees can be hesitant to allow canisters, even if they comply with regulations. Should I just suck it up, buy canisters in Leadville before the trip and carry the whole time or risk that the small stores at each stop have canisters in stock.
Thanks for any advise.

Jul 2, 2018 at 12:24 am #3544783I’m pretty sure that the Twin Lakes General Store will have canisters. They usually do…they also have a “hiker box” near the door that usually has at least a couple of partially used canisters. Call in advance if you want to be sure.
Jul 2, 2018 at 5:29 pm #3544898Thanks. I’m hoping the stores keep plenty in stock. I might arrive too late in Leadville to get some for the start of the loop.
Jul 5, 2018 at 6:53 pm #3545359Princeton Hot Spings carried canisters in Sept 2017. They were the large 16 oz isobutane canisters often found in Wally World, however (NOT the same as the green propane ones just to be clear. )

Jul 12, 2018 at 2:08 am #3546489I’m thru- hiking the CDT and in Steamboat, when I hiked through that area, both the Twin Lakes store and Monarch Crest Store had canister fuel.

The personal preferences of USPS employees are superseded by USPS regulations –
