I picked up a CNOC ThruBottle at Pacific Crest Trail Days in the summer of 2025. In short, it’s a more durable version of the classic single-use Smartwater bottle that many backpackers and thru-hikers rely on. It keeps the same shape and bottle mouth size, and it works with most of the same filtration systems designed for Smartwater bottles.

In use, I’ve really appreciated the increased durability. It feels sturdier and gives me more confidence that I’m not consuming as much microplastic as I likely would over time with a disposable bottle.

The main downside is that it’s a bit less flexible than a single-use Smartwater bottle. If your filtration setup requires squeezing the bottle to force water through a filter, expect to use a little more effort.

Overall, CNOC essentially took a disposable Smartwater bottle and turned it into a longer-lasting, more durable option with the ThruBottle—a solid upgrade for hikers who like the Smartwater system but want something reusable.

Best for: Backpackers and thru-hikers who already use Smartwater-style bottles and want a more durable, reusable option that works with their existing filters.

Not ideal for: Hikers who rely heavily on squeezing their bottle during filtration and prefer the maximum flexibility of disposable bottles.
