Hello,

I’ve recently watched Ryan’s informative video in the “How to Pitch an Ultralight Tent” course. In this video, Ryan discusses symmetrical trekking pole tents that are pitched with two poles and emphasizes that the corner stakes are the most critical ones for achieving proper tension. In a companion video (link here: https://youtu.be/Pz5xuFtJS40), he also recommends carrying four long MSR Groundhog stakes (7.5 inches) for this purpose.

Until now, I’ve always thought that the apex stakes were most critical. Hence, I’ve been carrying only two MSR Groundhog stakes and have been using the shorter MSR Mini Groundhog stakes (6 inches) for all other points.

Based on Ryan’s advice, I’m wondering if I’ve understood correctly: should I indeed carry four Groundhog stakes for the corners, and four Mini Groundhog stakes for the rest of the points (including two for the apexes and two for the panels)?

I appreciate any insights or clarifications you might have on this topic. Thanks in advance!

The angle of the guy line on the apex exerts more of a sideways force on the stake. The corner stakes are closer in and any lift on the tent creates more of an upward force on the stake. A slick stake can pull right out where a groundhog has some grip. At least that’s my limited observation. Im not answering for anybody.

On my particular tent, due to struts being used, the pull out guy line is close to vertical. It’s going to vary with the design.
