While on the HST, my brother and grandpa and I were trying to think of ways to lighten our packs, especially on this hot weather trip. I suggested a short quilt (something like the EE ProtĂ©gĂ© or one of the junior down quilts, I guess?), covering just the lower half of the body, and then insulating the top with BLs and/or a hooded down jacket, depending on the temperatures. I assume this would only work if you weren’t a cold sleeper or if you knew it was going to be relatively warm and your short quilt, jacket, and pad were sufficient.  Despite being a cold sleeper, my 0° Epiphany Quilt + Klymit Inertia Torso pad were major overkill due to the heat wave that hit the Sierras this week. Most nights I slept on top of the quilt with my down jacket nearby for the early morning chill. When I got cold, I just wrapped the quilt around my lower body and slept perfectly fine (maybe even still too warm some nights) with just a longsleeve shirt or my down hoody (On a side note, I’m starting to wonder if I just really suck at thermoregulating in any temperature greater than 60s and less than 50s!).

I searched the forums for “child’s quilt for adults” but didn’t find much. Has anyone tried this? What might be the biggest disadvantages ?

That’s EXACTLY what I was thinking of! So it exists! Thanks for that link. I was thinking a half-sized quilt plus a down hoody vs. a full-sized summer quilt would reduce the sleeping system weight, since you’re probably going to be brining the jacket anyway.

No problem! Searching google for elephant foot or half bag might generate more results.

Or you can be super goofy and wear your summer quilt as your jacket. Jacks r better makes a quilt with a head hole, very funny looking in jacket mode and pretty heavy for what it is. Or stuff the quilt into your over sized rain or wind jacket. I’ve tried it, it is super gooofy but very warm.
