Cheap, casual winter jacket recommendations?

Hi there,

Now that I bought my expensive but fragile down jackets that I don’t want to use for everday, commuting, etc – I need a cheaper, waterproof winter jacket :)

I thought that there must be a lot of cheap down or primaloft jackets in the 120-180$ range (sale, last season, etc) but it seems that it’s quite difficult to find good ones. I only found lots of cheap no-name products that I do not trust enough to buy.

I’m looking for a casual (e.g. in the style of a Patagonia Windsweep) winter jacket for temperatures to -5 or -10C and robust or even waterproof shell. Hood is not necessary, down or synthetic as well as weight doesn’t matter.

Can anyone maybe suggest something or give me a hint where to look? (I’m based in Europe).

Thank you Richard, those are really cheap! Do you have experience with the brand?
I would prefer the jacket version: http://global.llbean.com/shop/Trail-Model-Down-Jacket/88171.html

But there is no weight nor fill weight so it’s hard to judge if it’s suitable for winters.

Christoph,

LL Bean is a very reputable US company which has been in business for a long period. I recommend you use their user reviews to determine if your intended uses are similar to at least some of the reviewers.

Thank you Richard, I never really came across it yet somehow – but saw that it’s used a lot.
I’ll determine my size and order one of jackets.

In case anyone is interested in the specs of the LLBean Trail Model Down Jacket

Rating: 15 degrees when you are doing light activity and minus 35 degrees when doing moderate activity.

Materials

Shell: 100% polyester mini-ripstop with DWR, 2.12 oz. per sq. yd.
Lining: 100% nylon taffeta throughout, 1.7 oz. per sq. yd.
Hand warmer pockets: 100% polyester tricot, 4.5 oz. per sq. yd.

Insulation

Type: 650 fill power Duck Down (80% down / 20% feathers) with DownTek
Location: Throughout entire parka

The total weight of the jacket is approximately 2lbs 3 ounces

It seems to be really warm, based on the weight. In terms of looks I prefer the
Patagonia Windsweep Down Hoody http://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-windsweep-down-hoody/84890.html?dwvar_84890_color=MJVK&cgid=mens-jackets-vests-casual
or the
Montbell Colorado Parka https://www.montbell.us/products/disp.php?p_id=1101492
but they are probably not as warm and much more expensive.

Richard Nisley,

Thanks for your thoughts, I have a very similar query to  Christoph, however I am looking for women’s model. Perchance do you know the parallel model for females?
