I’ve been using an Exped Synmat UL 7 for several years now, with a GG Thinlite on top. I still run cold at night. Time to upgrade.

Looking at the Downmat HL Winter. Significantly warmer, thick at 3.5″, and I already have a Schnozzle.

The UL 7 is rectanglar, which worked well for me. I’m a side sleeper. I’m concerned about being happy with the Downmat mummy shape.

Anyone side sleepers out there have experience with making the switch?

I’m a side sleeper.  I owned/used a rectangular Exped Synmat UL 7 for (4?) years until it blew a baffle.  Replaced it with a mummy-shaped Synmat HL M.  The former was more comfortable, but only slightly so.  Feet hang off the side maybe a little more often with the new one, but it’s not really bothersome.  Probably the biggest difference is it’s a little harder to keep a pillow from sliding off the rounded head end.

I’m tall (6’5″) and use a standard 72″ length, FWIW.

I tend to agree with Todd . It is interesting that the baffles have blown on the Exped . I have had a fair bit to do with Exped mats and had several of my own and the baffles have all blown after several years use .Yes comfortable but not too long lived .

I find thermarest neo air to be more reliable and comfortable….but more expensive.

Todd thanks for relating your experience. I hadn’t thought about the pillow being a problem, just my legs.

Steve, interesting on the failed baffles. I’ve figured my pad was in a good batch, since I’ve used it for years without issue. Might be on borrowed time after all.

Yep Liz, I’m not going from 3 to a mere 4.0. I’m looking for a big change, make the expense worth it. Tired of being cold.

I’m a side sleeper and am fine on a mummy (NeoAir Xlite). I started with a long/wide thinking the regular width might be a side sleeper problem, and found that just didn’t bother me much. I use a regular now. I also added loops to attach my pillow.

I have found that I can get used to a significant change in sleep style if I put 3 nights into it — I guess that, given time, my body gives in to the new conditions. So I suggest that whatever you use, sleep on it on the floor at home for a couple of nights before backpacking and you’re body will be more used to it.

JR very good idea, practice at home first. Thanks.
