I’m looking for a lightweight caribiner for attaching to a bear bag. I’ve tried two so far, both of which broke after a few uses due to the spring getting dislodged by a small tree branch. The first one that broke was the ZPacks caribiner, which is quite small. I tried a slightly larger caribiner that I just had lying around, but it too broke in a similar fashion. I’m thinking that maybe I need a locking caribiner? Most of the ones I can find are quite large, as they are rated for climbing. I definitely don’t need that. Ideas?

I use one the cub scouts were passing out as an incentive for selling popcorn. To get one, all you need to do is run the popcorn sale for a cub scout pack.

I’ve used the ZPacks wire gate carabiner with a square cross section on my bear bag for a long time with no problem. Plenty of other companies private label the same biner.

Did you break one of those or the ZPacks biner with the round cross section? I’ve broken two of the latter version…

. NITE IZE S-BINER , I have never had a problem with mine, they are very strong(it’s the what came with the bear bagging system sold years ago with the BPL bear bag) many threads on them including the one I linked in this post.

I use the PCT method almost exclusively.  I’ve used both the Nite Ize #1 and the ZPacks wire gate…neither have ever been a problem.  I like the ZPacks when oriented with the narrow end up as it provides a large bearing surface for the stick.  The Nite Ize is nice as it allows easy attach/detach of the food bag while leaving the hang line in place.

I will clarify that I was <span style=”text-decoration: underline;”>not</span> using the wire-gate carabiners. I was using the ZPacks mini-D caribiner and a larger carabiner which had a similar design. I think that a branch caught into the locking mechanism, opened it up, forced it sideways, and then dislodged the spring.

that mini-D carabiner was what ZPacks supplied with their bear bagging kit.  It had a sharp edge that was cutting through the webbing loop within 1 hang. It was promptly disposed of before too much damage was done.

Maybe a Black Diamond Micron Carabiner? They aren’t rated as “load bearing,” but they are certainly plenty burly for this purpose. I thought of using one for the same purpose, so I called BD customer service to ask how much weight one would support (for a food bag). The response was, “We don’t test that biner, and we don’t recommend that you use it that way.” BS – this biner is plenty stout for supporting 10 pounds or more. Being a Black Diamond product, it is well made and not at all cheesy.

The metal Nite-Ize S binders are great. Avoid their plastic ones. The metal #1 S binder is rated at 5 lbs but I’ve been using one for years with up to 30 lbs with no problems. It’s only a few grams and the twin gates are handy – one gate for the cord, one for the bag.

They also make a #0.5 size that is rated at 2.5lbs. This probably would work for most food loads – might be getting a bit too light though.
