I know I’d need a converter, which I have. But would using one of those green 1lb Coleman propane tanks be okay with an MSR Windburner? If so, are there negatives to doing so?

It’s actually the Duo I’m looking at, which has the canister separate from the burner. Thanks for the link.

I do that for car camping with my Jetboil Sumo (it’s perfect for making a full Thermos of coffee).  It is tall and unstable and I stand there holding it the entire time (using the Sumo handle), but it boils the water so quickly that it’s not a big deal.

I’ve used straight propane on a number of butane-mix stove heads and it worked fine.

100% propane would create a slightly leaner fuel-air mixture than a butane mix, hence might produce less CO, especially at higher elevations.

Yes, but …

You will need an adapter to convert the propane thread to screw-thread. They are available on ebay.

You will also need to be a shade cautious with the control valve as burning straight propane takes less oxygen that a 70/30 mix. The mix would be very lean. You could experiment with a slight restriction on the air inlet, if you can reach that area. A 10-20% reduction in area should be fine.

Cheers

I got one of those propane bottle stands for car camping.  And a stove that screws directly onto the green propane bottle.  Works pretty good, more stable.  The weight of the bottle helps its stability.

But then I never use it.  I may have given it to the Goodwill.

I got a stove that uses those cheap butane cartridges from the Korean grocer.  That works pretty good.  I use that occasionally, very stable.  But not good below 32 F.

I use the green propane bottles to grill steak on the patio at home.

@Nick – Thank you!  I ordered one of those.  I’ll still be careful with my “tower” but that will help considerably and give me a little piece of mind for the $8 it cost me on Amazon.
