I typically use a hammock but on occasion have a need for a pad. I have an XLite Short for three season use but I’m in search of one for winter conditions. I’ll only need it a couple of times a year, so I’m trying to not spend too much. When on the ground, I’m a side sleeper so thicker is better, I tried an older Thermarest self-inflating (mil-surplus) this weekend and it was just too thin on the ground.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Buy used. I purchased a used neo-air all-season (predecessor to x-therm) off of gear swap a few years ago for $60. It’s slightly heavy at 19 oz and had a patch on it, but it has been very warm (much warmer than x-lite) and trouble free for me. I don’t see them on gear swap much – but you might start checking e-bay occasionally. I do see used x-therms all the time on gear swap.

Much of my high $ gear (packs, shelters, pad, sleeping bags, etc.) has been purchased used. If you have the patience to check various sources of used gear every couple of days over an extended period of time you can often find what  you are looking for. I also jump on clearance of discontinued models when new models come out.

Thanks, I’ve purchased several items through the gear swap here and have been very happy with the exchanges. For some reason looking for a pad didn’t come to mind though, thanks for the reminder.

@ Joe M, I am selling our families  Neo Air Xtherms. They have been used less than 10 days. A Regular and 2 Larges. I had not listed them here yet, will do after Christmas.  send me a pm if interested.
