I know people really like the MH Canyon but is there another sun shirt that is more breathable?  Thank you.

I’m not familiar with that shirt, but I do hike quite a bit with other sun shirts/ hoodies. Of the two I own, the OR Echo is the lightest and most breathable. If I’m hiking in hot and exposed conditions, that’s the one I’m taking. Some people will say the SPF rating is too low, but I did the JMT NOBO in August 2019, which was very warm and sunny with no rain or clouds the entire hike, and it provided full protection for me. It was never too hot, even well into the 80s at high exertion levels.

My other hoodie is an NRS and it is made from heavier fabric. I wore it this year in the Wind River Range and it did very well in the cooler than CA conditions. Most days ranged from upper 50s to upper 60s, and it was well suited to those temps.

I use a desert running shirt that is ultra breathable and highly recommend it.  Ran across the Grand Canyon and back (rim2rim2rim) in it – awesome shirt

My experience with the OR Echo is similar to Christian’s. Only rated SPF 15 but provides all the protection I need on weeklong-plus trips in the Sierra. Very breathable, and the fabric has a very nice, soft drape/feel.

EDIT: I also use a trekking umbrella for sun protection, but even areas that are not under the umbrella like my forearms do not burn through the shirt sleeves.

I have four Patagonia Tropic Comfort Hoody II, unfortunately discontinued. This is/was the standard for me.

I think it came out that they are not the claimed 50spf…but I’ve been well protected on week+ trips with them.

They seem to be replacing it with the Capilene Cool Daily Hoody. I didn’t like the fit. Interestingly, I can’t find an SPF listed on it, which makes me wonder if they’re avoiding standardization issues.

OR Echo will likely be my replacement. Is the 15spf is overstated?

Are SPF clothing standards even reliable across the board?

Hanes cool-dri shirts are my favorite budget option, usually get two for 20$. Treat with pemethrin beforehand and yr good to go.

I run hot, but I’ve liked a number in crewneck including the Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily (LS), REI active pursuits, and the Columbia Trail (or Sun?) Trek.  The latter had a more cottony soft feel but ripped a bit easier.  The last 2 were short sleeved, so I wore sun sleeves.

Button down wide the Columbia Silver Ridge Lite has a pretty nice feel.  Think they are all rated 40 to 50 UPF factor.

I’ll second what Wisner said and add that the Patagonia Sun Stretch has been good for me when in buggy conditions. I find it to be much cooler than a woven nylon shirts and I like how the front pockets unzip to provide more ventilation.
