So far I really only have found 3 brands that fit me well. I’m athletic  with no belly (33″ pants waist) and broad shoulders (39″ circumference under arm pits with empty lungs, 42″ with full lungs).

This puts me in size Medium or Large depending on the brand, and the ones that are cut well, IMO, are Smart Wool, ArcTeryx, and Sitka (base layers).

nearly all brands are cut for a big gut and average shoulders, so I end up with a horrible fitting/baggy stomach area and am still tight in the shoulders when reaching forward. This drives me nuts! I prefer form fitting clothing more similar to European styling even with my casual wear.

I have not experimented with a great deal of outdoor brands as there are few outdoor shops around me to try things on. Im sure there are other brands cut for athletic body types, mostly referring to upper body wear (shirts, shells, jackets, etc).

What other brands should I look into for athletic cut shirts/jackets/shells?

Marcus, 40” shoulders and 33” waist should be a perfect proportions for a western medium fit in most sizings.

Im an extreme athletic build, 42” shoulder circumference, 27” waist circumference. Ive just accepted im an extreme statistical anomaly and nothing is designed to fit me. Same problem with some hip belts on backpacks. American sizing is cursed for me, so no Patagonia. Arcteryx is better, but still not there. Some brands with asian sizing are better, but can slightly different proportions.

Arcteryx used to do athletic cuts, and very well. Over the past five years or so they’ve gone with the tight-chested Eurostyle, and their jackets are now what tailors would call slim. So unless you’re an ectomorph…

you might try Montbell and Marmot.

Marcus, my measurements are very similar to yours. I’ve been pleased with the fit of the OR Echo line for a top/baselayer. Works well across the upper body, not trim through the midsection but not baggy either. For a down puffy stay away from the Mtn Hardwear Ghost Whisperer, not enough chest and cut too high in the armpits for me.

Just accept the fact that you will have to get items tailored.  I have been doing so for years and it’s not too bad once you find a reasonably priced person.

I am a 33” waist and 44” chest.  Have had good luck with Patagonia base layers.  The wool blend ones they used to make (size large) were a great fit, though I’m not sure they make these any longer.  Size large in Patagonia’s other shirts can be a bit baggy in the waist but nice elsewhere, which makes for a simple alteration.
