boot fitment issue- need help

I typically run/hike in trail runners, but hunting takes my far off trail into some rocky, steep stuff that trail runners just don’t do well- so I ordered a pair of Salomon Quest 4D’s based on several recommendations.  I took them out the other day and where I normally have trouble, in the toebox, I had none.  My heel was locked in nicely and everything felt good.  About 4-5 miles in, I could feel some pressure above my outside ankle (near where the top of the outer boot is)- I loosened the boots a bit, but for the next couple of miles that pressure was still nagging me.  Not blister/rubbing nag- more of an acute (painful) pressure.  As the miles wore on, it got worse and worse, I even quit lacing the top two hooks- it helped some, but the damage may have already been done.

While these boots are stiff, they are not mountaineering stiff- probably somewhere between high top hiker and mountaineering boot.  Oddly my left foot didn’t experience the same pressure/pain.  The fit of the boot, size wise is perfect- plenty of room in the toe box, heel and midfoot comfortably locked in.

Anyone ever experience this before?  Is simply a matter of getting use to them?  More gradual break-in?  Maybe molefoam around the problem area?  Any suggestions?

I think I can get a refund on these boots, but they are exactly what I was looking for weight and stiffness wise- well except that pain thing :)

Thanks for any help.

Mike
