Bigger, Better (and worse) Fauxdini

I have 3 of the original fake Jack Wolfskin branded Fauxdinis (hereafter called the JW). You know, the ones that generated a multi-year discussion.   Love them… 2.8 ounces in Chinese XXL (equivalent of a small large or larger medium) , super breathable, dirt cheap. The problem is that the XXL is too small for some, and even for someone average like me (5’10”) the sleeves are a couple of inches short.  People have tried a lot of alternatives but most ended up not nearly as breathable. The other day I took the plunge on a possible alternative I found on Aliexpress. Here is the verdict….

The good news:   It is very breathable, much better than the current Patagonia Houdini.  It may be very slightly less than the JW version because the fabric feels more substantial.  In other words, feels more like the Patagonia version, breathes more like the Fauxdini. The XXL is slightly larger than the JW version, but the sleeves are about 2 inches longer. This should be a possible solution for larger than medium people and especially those who are bothered by the short arms.

The bad: weighs about 3.9 ounces versus 2.8 ounces (but it is larger). I am wondering what it weighs in the XL.  Hood does not pack into the collar.

The good or bad, depending on your point of view:  instead of a chest pocket, it packs into a zipper pocket inside the jacket. It also has 2 outside hand pockets…useless when carrying a backpack but nice to put your hands in for wearing around camp (where I use it most).  I would have preferred a chest pocket.   It has an elastic drawstring with a cord lock on the bottom. Nice feature, but adds weight. Hood is larger than JW Fauxdini version.

I will add some pics of the jacket on me in the next post…

First pic is me, 5’10” 175 lbs.  Second pic is my son, 6’2″, 195. Third pic is an original fake Jack Wolfskin version. Fourth pic shows the huge hood.

Water beads on it ok but it won’t take much of a shower to soak through.  I would not depend on it for anything but a light sprinkle and even then not for a sustained sprinkle. It will not replace my Hellum 2 or Essence, but then neither would a Houdini.

And to muddy the waters even MORE:

I am the person who found the faux-dinis, and I bought 2 of the original ones.  The sleeves were even a bit short on ME, and I’m female and 5’5″.  I lost one on the CT last year, so when I got back, I bought 2 more (from a different seller on eBay, but the jacket was identical, except without a Jack Wolfskin logo).  The newer jackets were the same fabric and design as the old ones, but they were cut a bit bigger, and the sleeves were about 1.5″ longer (perfect for me).

Another BPL’er messaged me about the jackets, and ordered the new version, but the ones he received still had the too-short sleeves. [I guess we’ve all heard about the sometimes sketchy quality control in Chinese factories… this might be an illustration of that.]

So… all this to say… the “original” ones are still available (super-light weight as ever), but they may or may not have the longer sleeves!

I was the user that rebought the JW version…and still got the older sleeve length. I did send it back for a refund though….even after two months, still haven’t gotten the refund. Sigh.

Anyway, I’m 5’10” 170lbs….now are you saying that the XXL might be a little too big and you think maybe the XL would have been a better fit for you? Your son at 6’2″, 195….the XXL still fits him so I would assume the XXL is a bit too large on you or are you liking the sizing?
