Massdrop has a Big Sky Mirage 2P for $280 right now which ‘m thinking about getting to replace my Tarptent Double Rainbow.

They are very similar in terms of design (both are hybrid wall), size and weight, but since I don’t use trekking poles anymore the BS gets the edge over the TT with respect to free-standing setup.

Any thoughts before the drop ends in two days?

My Tarptent DR sets up fine without the hiking poles for the socalled. Most of the time I use just 6 stakes.
What I love about the DR is the length and width. Two grown people actually fit inside.  I have owned other lightweight tents that crimp on both usable length and width.  My son now 6 ft 3 inches tall used to call them 1.5 person tents. I would check the Big Sky dimensions.

My only complain about the DR is I would like a bit more headroom. Sometimes both my wife and I want to sit up in the tent at the same time for a while when the mosquitoes are out.

Thanks Bruce. Here are the TT vs BS numbers:

Width: 50″ for TT and 53/47″ for BS

Length: 88″ for TT, 91″ for BS

Height: 43″ for TT, 42″ for BS

  • Note that I’m not sure if the TT values are for the floor unclipped or clipped.

The design is similar but one important point of difference is that the DR has all around air intake (mesh between the floor and the fly) the BSI does not.

that could mean better wind protection with the BSI but I would think more condensation when not windy.

Thanks Franco. That’s a good point.

By the way, regarding the photo of the BS you posted, do you have any idea why the the pole on the left side terminates about 8″ from the corner of the tent while the pole on the right side doesn’t?

Regarding condensation, I just skimmed Will Rietveld’s 2010 review here on BPL of the Mirage 1P and in the summary, under “What’s Good” he says “Great ventilation and condensation resistance”.

I’m *guessing* that it only seems that way because the fly on the right is deployed and shields your view of the pole end and tent corner.

Though it may not matter to some, I find it nice that tents from Big Sky are seam sealed.

I think pole termination in the Mirage is head versus foot. Better head space that way – but I don’t know for sure.
