Before this tract of BLM land was dedicated as a National Conservation Area in August of 2009, I received a pamphlet produced by the BLM that described the Big Dominguez canyon from one of the most legitimate cowboys I had ever known. Greg had given it to me during a time of backpacking research I had been conducting after being introduced to the many opportunities that are contained within the vast Colorado Plateau. Alas, years went by and in many ways I have so far failed to discover much of what desert gems my own state has to offer without having to cross the CO / Utah state line.

Thanks for sharing. A gem of oa place.

I am sure there are more, but I think mine is the only report of doing the Big D – Little D loop. The Wagon Park area was a mess in terms of old roads and such. I did indeed shwack down..it was at the edge of my comfort level for scrambling solo.

A few years later, a combo of the TI map (which I did not have then) and backcountry navigator would have made the challenges easy-peasy. :)

Paul,

Touche! I do remember now skimming over your trip report that you had posted prior to my own trip to the Big D. Somewhere in my process of skimming, I had assumed you stayed in Big Dominguez for your overnight! 35 mile solo loop in that terrain? Good on ya!

I promised my girlfriend that I’d take her to Dominguez sometime. Perhaps going as far up Big D by the north side of poison spring, and forming a loop to connect to Little D from there… The terrain south of Lightning Basin looks like it could be interesting.

I need to get back there. Amazing how beautiful it is back there esp with such a short drive.  I think your GF will enjoy it.

Not sure if it is good on me..I did not know how gnarly the terrain would be from Wagon Park to Little D. More like good luck/stubbornness ;D  I posted an alternate on my website of going around Black Point and dropping into the canyon.  Think that would work if I were to do it now.

The terrain does not change of course, but the problem with older topos is that sometimes roads are existing where they should not exist or visa versa.  The TI map is at home, but if I had it at the time, I suspect it would show the roads as they exist on the ground now.  But, I am going off three-year old memories at this point. :)
