Better can opener and alcohol stove?

I am still using one of those p-51 can openers but as I get older I am thinking I want something easier to open a can.  I do like the openers on swiss army knives but I cannot find one separate.  I have found them on the ends of sporks but really don’t like the tines when eating.  Anyone have seen something?

I also have been using an old cat can alcohol stove with my Evernew 1.3L pot. I like it because I can use it right under the pot.  But  thought it might be a good time to upgrade it to something better.  I do like the Calera Cone but don’t know how I would transport the stand.  Any suggestions and thank you.

I’d recommend giving the Caldera Cone a try. It’s very convenient and stable as a combined stand and windscreen, so you may feel it’s worth the weight. You can buy it with a couple of stoves. Try both and see which one you prefer. You can roll up the cone to carry. I’ve been really impressed with Rand’s products and customer service.

Curious what you are carrying in cans. Seems quite heavy. Any chance you could repackage?

A Sidewinder Caldera Cone will fit easily in your pot with room to spare. The stability is great and it protects your stove in windy conditions. It’s a really nice setup.

Thanks for the details the both of you.  It will be ordered.  I just don’t know much about the different stove options.

As for the can opener, it is for the urban camping.  You can pop into any convenience store, pop open a can into the smaller ziplock screw top container and heat it up in a microwave before moving along.

+1 for the Caldera Cone Sidewinder. I like the Kojin stove slightly better than the Starlyte from Woodgaz. Both are very light. With the wide pot, you can’t go wrong.

+1 on Esbit. You’ll get a few tablets and a Gram Cracker with your cone. Try it out, it’s a great choice in many situations.

I really just want alcohol.  Is it possible to get it without wood or esbit?

Basic Wood option is free, it’s the cone that holds the pot. You can buy an inferno option which makes it a better wood burner, but that’s not necessary. The esbit option I also thought was free with one alcohol burner. Keep it or not. It works well to boil water, I didn’t think you are not paying extra for it, but maybe they would give you a small discount. I carry esbit only as a backup and the holder is small and light.

+1 also on the sidewinder and kojin.  This is my preferred set up. That said, I used esbit with the gram cracker on my jmt hike this summer (my travel logistics didn’t enable alcohol).  I still prefer alcohol.  Though it weighs more, alcohol lights more easily, is more flexible when a longer burn is needed, and leaves no residue on my pot.

I’ll add a vote for the Flat Cat Gear Bobcat stove, works very nicely with the 1.3 pot. Nice and compact, fits in the pot. There’s the option to add an Esbit burner if you wish.
