We have an Exped Venus 2 UL. It is a tunnel tent, but slightly different in that one sleeps parallel to the hoop poles. We pitched in once on a windy night with the wind at our feet (i.e., with the wind parallel to the main hoop poles) and the tent held-up, but it was like a bucking bronco. Thinking about it afterwards we wondered if the tent would have done better with the main poles perpendicular to the wind direction like you would do with a more standard tunnel tent. So, in the case of our Venus, one side would be pitched into the wind.

Your thoughts?

Hi Paul

I agree, you might get slightly less movement in the wind if you pitch it with the wind direction perpendicular to the hoop poles. Here are some other things that might help:

Wind parallel to hoop poles:

Use 2 m/6 ft guy cords on each of the 5 guy points – both sides (black lines). Long guy cords work better, the top 3 are the most important.

Wind perpendicular to hoop poles:

Use 2 m/6 ft guy cords on each of the top and middle guy points (yellow lines). The middle one will help more than the top one, as long as the vestibule is securely pegged.

If you use adjustable walking poles, try jamming one under the pole crossover, to support the hoop pole on the windward side. Maybe you can tie it in place to a loop on the inner tent (red line).

Strong winds – any directions:

See if you can rig a cord inside the fly, between the upper guy cord attachment points on each pole. (blue line). You might need to sew a webbing loop to the pole tunnel seam on the inside, then you can tie the cord to the loop.

+1 to everything Will said.

To get the most out of a vertical pole, guy it out under the fly just as you would for a tarp. Connect lines from the top of the pole to the stake at the end of the vestibule and at the bottom of each end of the hoop pole.
