I have an HMG Porter, which has no external pockets. I have gotten used to using shoulder strap bottle pockets. I like the easy access and the sorta counterbalance I get with the weight on my back. I usually use Smartwater 750 or 1L bottles with flip caps. Currently I am using some old MLD bottle pockets, and they have a few design flaws that bug me. The attachment for the top of the bottle pocket is too far down, leaving the entire pocket a bit floppy while loaded with a full bottle. I am hoping to get some input from people who use bottle pockets on shoulder straps and what they like/don’t like, and what works and doesn’t work. I am looking for a light, solid, durable shoulder strap bottle pocket that will fit up to a 1L Smartwater type bottle.

Justins UL for 1L bottles and Zimmerbuilt for 750. I really like the Zimmerbuilt-easier to take bottle in/out as it’s not so elastic.
Zimmerbuilt is my jam. They are particularly good with a Gatorade bottle but they work with 1 Liter Smartwater bottles.
I use 2 x z-packs 1l and they are pretty good for my non z-packs pack.
Fitting them is a little fiddly but they are surprisingly stable in use.
Take a look at Hilltop Gear water bottle pocket. Will fit either 750 or 1l bottle.
A little more expensive due to being made out of dyneema. Weighs half an oz.
I just had a look at the Zimmerbuilt and the MLD pockets. Turns out I have Zimmerbuilt pockets. I suspect mine may have been made a little wrong or something. Zimmerbuilt stuff is usually great, but I don’t care for these pockets. Justin’s Ultralight look nice.
My friend likes Chicken Tramper’s water bottle sleeves.
Consider using an Aquaclip and a loop of bungee at the bottom to keep it from bouncing around. Love my setup

That’s weird. That doesn’t sound like Zimmer to make something wrong. Mine has the upper clip right at the top as in the photos on his site.
The Zimmerbuilt are great as you can you just one hand and easily drink on the ‘run’-like a car cup holder for your pack. Justin UL needs two hands to open the elastic top and slide bottle in.
I have been enjoying the Gossamer Gear bottle rocket. Cinches down nicely.
+1 for the GG bottle rocket, It’s just the right size for either a smartwater bottle or a bear spray canister. The Aquaclip gets a lot of use if I’m exploring away from camp, as it hangs nicely from your belt or belt loop.
I love the AquaClip for on-trail adventures. That said, I have managed to break 2 of them during the last 2 off-trail events. If you’re scraping and banging they may not survive.
