Brad, wondering how all this worked out?  What Stove ended up being you keeper?

We purchased several Xcelerator stoves. We took them on a campout last year and they worked well with small pots. We do Philmont next year and haven’t done a shakedown hike yet to test them with big pots.

If I remember, we’ll take one on our next campout this month. It’s car camping, but we should try one with big pots in the Philmont way.

There’s always risk with a stove, but these remote canister stoves seem much safer than the white gas stoves our troop was using for backpacking. We have 2 burner stoves for each patrol on our car camping trips.

Back in the day (2010, smirk) I was an advisor in a crew of 9 and our ranger allowed us to use two stoves (MSR Windpro) and two smaller pots that totaled at least 8 qts.  But not all rangers are the same so I’d assume you’ll be “stuck” with the 8 qt monster.

In looking at options suggested I noticed another one… Fire Maple FMS-105

it is not the lightest (about 8oz) but sits low and much broader (fills about a 7″ circle) folds much smaller

Looks to be available here:

That’s a good price. A scout is thrifty.

Since we bought 4 of them, I’m hoping the Xcelerator stoves will work well. They’re certainly very good for the smaller pots we already tried.

We might not have a full crew, so perhaps a 6 quart pot will be enough.

I’ll be taking a SOTO Amicus stove to make coffee since a properly caffeinated scoutmaster is the number 1 safety consideration in scouting. :)
