I can afford one paid mapping software. I’ve looked at Gaia, AllTrails, and CalTopo. My needs are simple: lots of trails (I hike mostly in federal/state parks, preserves, forests, etc.), easy to define a route by clicking on trails (not having to enter dozens of waypoints), and download the routes to my Garmin GPS.

I’d be grateful for the group’s advice.

Thanks,

Dan

Look into OnX, Backcountry Navigator, Goat Maps (in beta), and Avenza. I’ve tried all these and the ones you mentioned. I’m currently using Gaiagps and Avenza. I’m also trying the beta of Goat maps. I know there are more, but there are only so many hours in a day.

I use Gaia to track hikes and CalTopo to plan a longer hike so I can print out maps.  I don’t pay for these and I don’t see how they would be an all-in-one solution. I’ll look at AllTrails when looking for a hike, but haven’t paid to download maps.  Will OnX replace all of these?  Why is it better than the rest?
