Hi there,

I enjoy using CalTopo for its customizability with trip planning and navigation, but find the phone app somewhat limiting because you cannot snap to the route (snap-to lines), and it has a few other bugs. I have used some other apps and was wondering what your favourite app is. I’m looking for use cases in Canada (some apps only have American maps), but feel free to share if you use an app in a different country.

Here are some apps I’ve heard of. Please let me know your thoughts on these or other apps for both trip planning and navigation in the field:

OnX seems to be more popular. But why is its appstore rating so low?

I have used TopoUSA and I believe it covers Canada too (might be another app?).

OnX is geared towards hunters I believe. You might be paying for features you don’t need but lots of people use it. Honestly as long as I can download a map and find my location on it I don’t need much more.

OnX Backcountry (not to be confused with their Hunt app) has come a long way in the last year and is my current favorite for the U.S.  It has fewer map layers than either Gaia or Caltopo, but I really like their base topo map and the mobile app seems less buggy. It’s clearly seeing active development as many features have been added or improved recently. Unfortunately, I don’t think their base map for Canada is very good.

My second choice is Gaia. If their own base map isn’t great for Canada (haven’t used it there), they have the actual Canadian topo map as a layer. I don’t love the Gaia mobile app and it feels like it’s languished after being bought by Outside.

I used Caltopo for quite a while but as mentioned, their mobile app leaves something to be desired.

I have US Topo Maps Pro on my phone. Just checked and it does cover Canada or the Yukon at least. Canadian topo maps similar to USGS maps and good ESRI satellite images.
