Anyone know of a Bear-proof food container that can be split in half, so that the thing can be split between two people to carry it in their packs more easily?
I am not sure that I want an Ursack (before anyone mentions that). Looking for a rigid container.
Thanks!

The size of the plastic containers makes them unwieldy to carry. If they screwed in half it would be a lot better IMHO.

I recently got the Bare Boxer Contender that Richard May suggests. I haven’t used it yet but I think that with reasonably careful food selection and packing (e.g. re-packaging MH into vacuum bags) I can squeeze 3 days’ worth into it. So if you carry the first day’s food out of the bear can, that represents enough capacity for a 5-day (4-night) trip… if that works for ya. :^)
This canister fits very easily into a Zpacks Zero
Jun 23, 2017 at 9:28 am #3474998There was one that was supposed to come out in 2011 but it still says it does not have approval HERE is a link to the old thread that has info and more links to a video and the maker’s website for The Bearier 700 and Grub Hub.

Jun 23, 2017 at 10:05 am #3475009+1 on Bob’s comments. I’ve been impressed with the Bare Boxer Contender 101 canister’s ability to fit into the smallest packs. 3 days food crams in with a little work and repackaging – ideal for trips up to four days.
Hm..maybe I need to re-consider the ursack
If you are hiking an area that allows them, has good trees and less bear pressure, definitely consider the Ursack. Bear protection gear is so heavy compared to the rest of UL gear that having a “quiver” of options so you can always take the lightest legal and effective option makes sense. I prefer the Ursack in parts of WA state with less bears and that allow them, unless I plan to camp above treeline.
