I live in an area with both grizzlies and black bears.  Which I thought most of Banff was as well.  It’s rare to see a black bear out in the open like that, even though we have 10X as many black bears as grizzlies.

When I get to places with no salmon streams and only black bears, then I see far more black bears out in the open like that.

Usually, when I startle them up here, they dart back into a cover, but the larger adults are less skittish that way.

Loves me some Banff.  We saw this guy on our first trip

is he shaking off water?  Like a dog?

That looks awfully close.  Unless you had a high power lens.

200mm and cropped a little.  About 50 yards maybe?  It was a while ago.

We baited him closer with PBJ sandwiches.

JOKING!

Amy took this picture from the safety of our car.

Elle,

Banff is such a special place.  We’ve been there a few times and are overdue for another visit.  While I enjoy Yellowstone, I prefer Banff due to the variety and abundance of wildlife.  We tend to see equal numbers of black and grizzly bears every time we visit.

Anywho, nice shot of the bear.  Hope you had a great trip.
