Hi there,

My car is basically a mini camper, with bed (wood/metal) that I use for hiking trips etc. The mattress I’m using right now is a Prolite Plus – as it is rather thin for  car camping, I’m thinking about upgrading it for a bit more comfort.

I thought about these options:

Neoair Camper SV http://www.cascadedesigns.com/therm-a-rest/mattresses/camp-and-comfort/neoair-camper-sv/product

Trail Pro http://www.cascadedesigns.com/therm-a-rest/mattresses/trek-and-travel/trail-pro/product

Luxury Map http://www.cascadedesigns.com/Therm-A-Rest/Mattresses/Camp-And-Comfort/LuxuryMap/product

However, someone suggested to use the Prolite Plus with an additional Zlite underneath. Benefits are that this setup is more flexible and I could use the Zlite to sit outside in the evenings as well.

I’m unsure though about how comfortable this is compared to the other options above – can anyone maybe give me some input? For hiking I’m using a Neoair Xlite which is great, however for the car I could use something a bit heavier that is more comfortable/easier to inflate etc…

You should look at the Exped Syn ul 9, it’s really comfortable. I have the long wide.

I’d go for an Exped megamat 10 lxw I think. REI has them if you want to see one first.

Thermorest dream time is hard to beat. I use it in my Honda element on a platform or under the stars and sleep about as well as I do at home. Well worth the $.

I’m in Europe – Exped and Thermarest are usually available, the others are not so easy to get. Wow never knew Exped had so many different pads now… I have to dig through that.

Although I’m sleeping in the car I want to stay as light and compact as possible, thus the dream time is a bit too much, especially since I’m folding it away during the daytime.

@matthew_king it’s a VW Caddy, not really a camper :) I’ve built myself a minimalistic and flexible bed, kitchen sink, solar panels, rotating passenger seat, etc. The reason I use it is basically a) to sleep anywhere I want (where usually a camper van is not tolerated) and b) it’s flexible and fast as an everyday car. For me it’s the best car I can imagine, minicamper, mountainbike/kayak/whatever transporter.. and as mentioned I like it minimalistic :)

Exped 3D 7 LW is my go to for hiking now, vertical side walls make a huge difference and the comfort is so much better than Xlite or Synmat UL. Weighs around 1kg but completely worth it

Thanks for the inputs, I had a look at the options now, and what I’m unsure about is: self-inflating vs pump. The ones with self-inflation (as my prolite plus) have are a bit more even on the surface, it’s not the typical airbed style. Also they are not as noisy and feel more like a bed, in my opinion.

Options from Exped:

http://www.exped.com/international/en/product-category/mats/synmat-tt-9-lw
http://www.exped.com/international/en/product-category/mats/synmat-3-d-7-lw
http://www.exped.com/international/en/product-category/mats/sim-comfort-75-lw
http://www.exped.com/international/en/product-category/mats/sim-comfort-75-lw

I tend towards the SIM COMFORT 5 LW (5cm, self inflating) at the moment vs the SYNMAT 3-D 7 LW (air) – it would be interesting how they compare.

Regarding Therm-a-rest the SIM COMFORT 7.5 LW would be the same as the Luxury Map, while being a bit lighter. So if I size up one comfort level it would probably be the SIM COMFORT 7.5 LW.

What’s your opinion?

I think I will get the Exped SIM COMFORT 5 LW for now and try – I hope it’s alright
