My mother would roll over in her grave if she saw me using 80 plastic bags ONCE and throwing them away. I was taught to save and re-use everything! Yes yes, we all do lots of other things that damage the environment. But this one is easy to avoid. Unlike motorized transport, there are superior alternatives, like the silicone bags recommended up thread or your pot. You’re already carrying a pot – put your food in it and eat it! skip all the plastic. You don’t eat out of plastic bags at home do you? why do it on trail? And then you have to carry partially melted gooey food filled plastic bags out – heavy! If you’re rinsing out the bags before you carry them out, then why not just rinse out your pot instead? Then you can reuse the dry bags. At home we have a little spindle thing that holds 9 plastic bags to dry.
On the food taste question though, once again I find the meals from Packit Gourmet (PG) my favorite. Interestingly with a google search for the company just now, Peak Refuel pops up first as a sponsored result! Sneaky! PG soups are great, their bean dishes (cold or hot ones) are all really good. The pizza one was not my favorite since it’s mostly cheese. If you like cheese you’ll like it. And the ones that try to be like Mountain House – chicken and dumplings for example – are not as good. They’re very expensive but I split most of their meals into 2 and add a bit of rice or couscous or extra freeze dried meat and then they’re just the right size.
More and more I’m just doing my own prepared meals, because it’s so much cheaper. I have not yet goten sick of thai -inspired ramen with peanut butter and coconut milk. But I like to throw in a premade meal now and then for variety, even Mtn House spaghetti when I need “comfort” food, i.e., bland but predictable ordinary food.
