I found this .pdf magazine while looking up the materials of a backpack I am gutting. It was a fun read and reminded me of what many adult hiker’s robust and boxy gear looked like for me back then.

WOW. a 7.5# pack! My first internal frame was a Gregory that weighed about 8 empty….that puppy went with me all over the world!
Now that’s pretty much what my base weight is on a nice summer weekend….
I still have my Terraplane, though I haven’t worn it as a pack in ages. It is my bomb proof duffel bag now, and I imagine it will be until the end of my days.
Photo of me in 1997 in the Catskills on an early summer backpacking trip. IIRC I had a Coleman propane lantern inside that mondo McHale. Sure could carry a lot of stuff in those, lol.
I like it better now, carrying way under 20lbs…
What a view in the above photo, though. Seriously. Northeast foliage par excellence.
